Fudo-Myoo
In Vajrayana Buddhism (also known as Tantric or Esoteric Buddhism) Fudo-Myoo is the most well-known of the Five Wisdom Kings, the protectors of the Five Buddhas, each of which, in turn, represent one of the five tenets of Buddhism (Fives are important, if you can’t tell). Fudo-Myoo, also known as Acala, is the destroyer of delusion, and seen as a protector and aide in attaining goals.
Fudo-Myoo is displayed with a terrifying face, often surrounded by a halo of flames, said to consume the passions that would deter enlightenment. In one hand he holds a sword, which is used to conquer greed, anger and ignorance, and in the other he holds a rope with which he catches those who oppose the Buddha.
Oh, I’m sorry, you thought all forms of Buddhism were about peace, love and enlightenment? Well m’boy here’s gonna tie you up with a rope and cut you, son!
