The Mishipizheu

The Mishipizheu, or “underwater panthers”, originated in myths of the Ojibwe tribe, and many other North American cultures expanded from the Ojibwe’s interpretation. They were a major component to the ceremonial complex of the Mississippian and great lakes culture in the prehistoric. 

The Mishipizheu were an amalgamation of many different animals: they possessed the body of a panther with the scales of a snake and the antlers of a deer, and were said to live in the deepest parts of lakes and rivers. Most cultures saw the Mishipizhue as a bad omen, bringing death and misfortune to those nearby. They were thought to be the rulers of the underworld by the Algonquin people, and the lords of sea creatures by the Ojibwe. 

Motto of the day: “Don’t catch these water-cats on the flip-side.”  Get it? Flip side! Like the underworld! Heheh…Ahem…just stay away from horned-cats.
