Have you read American Gods by Neil Gaiman? What do you think of Gaiman's portrayal of the various pantheons?
I have indeed, and I really enjoyed that book. More than anything else, I admire his subtlety. Every deity-character is given a list of descriptors, brief or detailed, but they’re presented in a very interpretive fashion. Quirky mannerisms cleverly point to scriptural depictions and traits, and its up to the reader to either catch the references, or have their interest piqued by these fascinating and strange individuals, and thus look up the info on said god, goddess, pantheon, or civilization.
He was definitely as accurate as you can be when you’re dealing with this sort of source material, as some specifics, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, vary by region and period.
When you finish the book and think about his decisions to put certain gods in certain roles, (I’m thinking of Odin, Loki, Anansi and Czernobog in partiuclar here) you really appreciate his understanding of “mythology” and the many interpretations of the word. Besides carrying their respective cultures’ moral torches, they do a great job of demonstrating how myths and religion themselves were viewed by the folks that conjured them up. I’m afraid of droppin’ spoilers, but I definitely recommend the book to all of you followers.
